In line with the implementation of the Third Development Plan for the economic, social, and cultural advancement of the country, and with the aim of accessing global markets and obtaining a significant share of the methanol market, Zagros Petrochemical Company was established in 2000 (1379 in the Persian calendar). In order to enhance the company's competitiveness in global markets and considering the rich gas resources in the South Pars region and the strategic position of the area, a 31-hectare land was acquired in the Pars Energy Special Zone, and the production complex of this company was built in Asaluyeh Port. Furthermore, the complex was designed in a way to maximize the energy produced in the synthesis reactors and utilize energy recycling in the reforming unit to meet the required energy needs. This enables the production and sale of approximately 205 tons of steam per hour at a pressure of 40 bar. The engineering, procurement, and equipment supply contract was signed with a consortium composed of Lurgi (Germany) and PIDEC (Iran), and all construction and installation operations were carried out by Iranian contractors. The first phase began in 2001 (1380 in the Persian calendar) under the agreement with Lurgi and PIDEC, and it concluded in 2006 (1385 in the Persian calendar) with an annual capacity of 1.65 million tons of AA-grade methanol. With the completion of the second phase in 2009 (1388 in the Persian calendar), Zagros Petrochemical Company reached an annual production capacity of 3.3 million tons, placing it among the top five major methanol producers in the world.
