The petrochemical industry of the country is one of the influential drivers in the realm of development and the national economy. With a defined 20-year vision, it promises to create transformation in the vast economic and social dimensions of Iran. Shimibaft Petrochemical Company was initially established in 1994 (1373 in the Persian calendar) and officially began its operations in 1999 (1378 in the Persian calendar) with the aim of producing the strategic product MTBE. It became the second-largest producer of this product in the country, with a capacity of 45,000 tons per year, starting its operation in 2002 (1381 in the Persian calendar). The second unit also reached the same capacity in 2006 (1385 in the Persian calendar). The feedstock for this complex includes C4 cuts (Raffinate 1) and methanol, with the main product being Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE), and C4 cuts (Raffinate 2) as a byproduct. MTBE plays a crucial role in increasing the octane number of gasoline and significantly reducing the emissions from vehicles. The site of this company, formerly known as Chemi-Tex Aria, which merged with Shimibaft Company in 2019 (1398 in the Persian calendar), is located at Site 2 of the Petrochemical Special Economic Zone in Bandar Mahshahr. It started its operation in 2013 (1392 in the Persian calendar) as the first and only producer of Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) in Iran and the Middle East, with a nominal capacity of 5,000 tons per year. MEK is an important commercial industrial solvent widely used in base oil refineries, paint and resin industries, printing, and synthetic leather. The intermediate product of this site includes 2-Butanol (SBA) and its byproduct is Raffinate 3 and Heavy Alcohols.
