The Shahid Tondguyan Petrochemical Complex was established on February 6, 1998, in the northwestern corner of the Persian Gulf, in Khuzestan province, within the Bandar Imam Khomeini (BIK) Special Economic Petrochemical Zone. It occupies an area of 34 hectares and is dedicated to the production of PET and PTA. The complex consists of three production sectors: Chemical, Polymer, and Textile. The Chemical sector comprises the PTA1 and PTA2 plants, which utilize paraxylene and acetic acid as their feedstock, producing a net annual output of 077 thousand tons of purified terephthalic acid. The products of this sector can be used as solvents in industrial adhesives and in the production of polyethylene terephthalate. The Polymer sector is composed of the PET1 and PET2 plants. PET1 consists of four units, while PET2 consists of three units. The feedstock for these plants is PTA and mono-ethylene glycol. They have an annual production capacity of 333 thousand tons of bottle-grade PET and 551 thousand tons of fiber-grade PET. The plants are capable of producing various grades of PET based on customer demand, which finds applications in industries such as textile manufacturing for fiber production, engineering resins in the automotive industry, packaging materials for food and hygiene industries, surgical thread production in the medical sector, photographic and cinematographic films in the film industry, and more. The Textile sector includes two units: STAPLE and POY, both producing polyester fibers. Each unit has a molten polymer input capacity of 33 thousand tons per year. Textile products find use in the production of various items such as bedding, machine-made carpets, rugs, sportswear, elastic fabrics, curtain fabrics, and more.
